London, UK — The London Wine Competition has announced two new trophies for single-serve wines as part of its 10th edition in 2027, reflecting the growing importance of alternative packaging formats across the retail, travel and hospitality sectors.
The two new trophies are:
- Single-Serve Wine of the Year
- Single-Serve Wine Producer of the Year
The awards will recognize wines and producers that successfully combine wine quality with strong value, effective packaging and clear commercial relevance.
Eligible single-serve formats may include:
- Wine cans
- 187 ml and 200 ml miniature bottles
- Individual sparkling wine bottles
- Pre-filled and sealed wine glasses
- Single-serve wine cups
- Small PET or aluminium bottles
- Individual wine pouches
- Small-format cartons
- Other packages designed for individual consumption
Still, sparkling, fortified, flavoured, low-alcohol and no-alcohol wines may qualify, subject to the relevant competition category requirements.
Single-serve packaging is creating new opportunities for wine producers, retailers and hospitality businesses. It allows wine to reach consumers in occasions where a traditional 750 ml glass bottle may not always be the most practical option.
Individual formats can offer greater convenience, portability and portion control while helping businesses reduce product wastage and serve wine more efficiently. They can also encourage trial by allowing consumers to purchase a smaller quantity before committing to a full bottle.
Single-serve wines may be particularly relevant for:
- Supermarkets and convenience retailers
- Travel retail
- Airlines, rail operators and cruise lines
- Hotels and minibars
- Room service programmes
- Stadiums and entertainment venues
- Festivals and outdoor events
- Resorts and poolside service
- Corporate catering and private functions
- Online retailers and subscription services
- Venues where glass bottles may be restricted
- Consumers looking for moderation and portion control
For producers, the format can provide access to new distribution channels and drinking occasions. For buyers, however, convenience alone is not enough. The wine must still deliver the quality, value and presentation expected by the target consumer.
“Single-serve wine is becoming an increasingly relevant part of the global wine market,” said Sid Patel, CEO and Founder of Beverage Trade Network, organisers of the London Wine Competition. “These formats can create new occasions for wine while offering convenience, portion control and reduced wastage. Through these two new trophies, we want to recognize the wines and producers that combine those practical benefits with genuine quality, strong value and effective packaging.”
Single-serve wines will not be placed in a separate or less demanding judging process. They will be evaluated according to the same standards as wines entered in traditional bottles.
During the quality assessment, wines are tasted blind. Judges assess what is in the glass without being influenced by the brand, producer or packaging format.
Single-serve entries will be placed within their relevant tasting flights alongside comparable wines. For example, a Merlot presented in a single-serve format will be tasted alongside other Merlots and judged using the same quality standards.
This means an eligible single-serve wine can compete for the London Wine Competition’s existing medals and applicable awards, including:
- Wine of the Year
- Best Wine by Country
- Best Wine by Quality
- Best Wine by Value
- Best Wine by Packaging
- Best Wine by Varietal
- Other applicable category awards<
- Single-Serve Wine of the Year
The packaging format will not prevent an outstanding wine from competing for the competition’s principal awards.
The London Wine Competition evaluates wines based on the three factors that influence real-world buying decisions: quality, value and packaging.
Quality
Judges assess the wine’s appearance, aroma, body, taste, balance, structure, finish and overall drinking experience. Quality carries double the weight in the competition’s scoring system, ensuring that the wine itself remains central to the final result.
Value
Judges consider whether the wine delivers appropriate value at its intended retail price. This is not simply a search for the least expensive wine. It examines whether the quality and overall proposition justify the price being asked of the consumer.
Packaging
Judges assess how effectively the packaging communicates the wine’s identity, positioning and intended market. For single-serve wines, this may include the practicality of the format, visual appeal, shelf presence and suitability for the target consumer and consumption occasion.
This approach allows a single-serve product to be judged first as a wine and then as a complete commercial proposition.

Single-Serve Wine of the Year
The Single-Serve Wine of the Year trophy will recognize the highest-performing eligible wine entered in an individual serving format.
The winner will need to demonstrate outstanding wine quality together with strong value, effective packaging, and clear relevance to its intended market.
Single-Serve Wine Producer of the Year
The Single-Serve Wine Producer of the Year trophy will recognize a winery, wine brand or producer demonstrating outstanding performance within the single-serve category.
This award is intended to recognize producers making a serious and consistent commitment to individual wine formats across winemaking, packaging, positioning and the overall consumer experience.
Final eligibility and award calculations will be subject to the London Wine Competition’s published competition rules.
Alternative packaging can offer clear operational and environmental advantages, but its commercial success ultimately depends on the quality of the complete product.
The strongest single-serve wines will be those in which the format provides a genuine benefit without compromising freshness, appearance or the drinking experience.
Buyers may consider questions such as:
- Does the wine deliver sufficient quality for its price?
- Is the serving size appropriate for the target occasion?
- Does the packaging protect the wine effectively?
- Is the format easy to store, chill, open, and serve?
- Does the product stand out on a retail shelf or online listing?
- Is the positioning clear to the intended consumer?
- Does the packaging create a credible reason to purchase?
By assessing quality, value, and packaging together, the London Wine Competition will identify products with the potential to succeed beyond the tasting room and in the real marketplace.
Single-serve wines are not intended to replace traditional bottles or established wine service. Instead, they can expand the number of occasions in which wine may be offered and enjoyed.
A single can, miniature bottle, cup or pouch can provide a practical option when a full bottle is unnecessary, inconvenient or restricted. It can also introduce wine into occasions traditionally dominated by beer, spirits, cocktails or ready-to-drink beverages.
For retailers, single-serve wines may encourage impulse purchases, sampling and cross-category placement. For hospitality operators, they may support faster service, consistent portions and better wastage management. For consumers, they can offer convenience and greater control over how much they purchase and consume.
