Meet the Judges: Maria Boumpa, Wine Director & Restaurant Manager at Da Terra

Inside the expertise, passion, and global perspective of UK Sommelier of the Year 2025.

As the Wine Director at London’s two-Michelin-starred Da Terra and UK Sommelier of the Year 2025, Maria Boumpa makes key purchasing decisions that shape one of the most prestigious wine programs in the UK fine dining scene.

Her role requires sourcing wines that not only deliver exceptional quality but also tell a compelling story — the same qualities the London Wine Competition rewards.

Wineries impressing judges like Maria are demonstrating that their wines can stand out in competitive, high-end markets. Maria brings deep expertise in wine pairing, guest experience, and fine dining service. Her approach blends technical precision with a passion for storytelling, helping guests discover unique bottles that perfectly match their meals. With roots in Greece and extensive international experience, she curates wine lists that celebrate both heritage and innovation.

When she’s not curating Da Terra’s award-winning wine list, Maria’s favourite place to enjoy a glass is Trivet, the two-Michelin-starred Bermondsey restaurant co-owned by chef Jonny Lake and sommelier Isa Bal.

Who or what inspired your journey into wine?

My journey in wine began in Greece, surrounded by a family and culture that embraced gastronomy. It was the passion of local winemakers and the discovery of diverse terroirs that truly sparked my interest.

One piece of advice you’d give to wineries entering the London Wine Competition

Showcase your wine as a complete package — ensure its quality, value, and presentation are equally compelling.

Having your wines judged by UK Sommelier of the Year 2025 means putting them in front of a buyer whose opinion carries weight across the global wine trade. Maria Boumpa’s approval signals to importers, distributors, and top restaurants that your wines are not only exceptional in quality but also market-ready for the world’s most competitive dining scenes.
