We are delighted to welcome Antonio Palmarini to the 2026 London Wine Competition judging panel. An Italian-born wine and sake specialist with more than 15 years of hospitality experience, Antonio currently serves as Head Sommelier at Nela and previously Head of Beverage at Beaverbrook, where he curated world-class beverage programs spanning wine, sake, tea, and spirits.
Antonio’s career is defined by technical depth and cultural breadth. With certifications in sake and extensive judging experience at international wine competitions, he brings a unique multidisciplinary lens to every tasting. His passion lies not only in the beverages themselves, but in the memorable guest experiences shaped through storytelling, pairing, and service. Known for mentoring teams and driving innovative, consumer-centric beverage programs, Antonio embodies the modern sommelier: globally informed, approachable, and instinctively attuned to evolving trends.
“In 2011, I had the privilege of working under Jean-Claude Ali-Cherif, my first French manager, who introduced me to the world of wine. His extensive knowledge, especially around wine and cheese pairings, deeply influenced my professional journey.”
10 Cases (for wine), Moto (for sake), and Mei Leaf (for tea).

About 10 Cases
Located in Covent Garden, 10 Cases is a beloved spot among London’s wine community for its refreshingly simple philosophy: offer only ten red and ten white wines at any given time — always changing, always interesting. The bistro’s rotating list encourages discovery and spontaneity, making it a natural favourite for professionals like Antonio who value both quality and unpretentious exploration.
About Moto (London)

As a sake specialist, Antonio’s admiration for Moto comes as no surprise. Nestled in Covent Garden, Moto is one of London’s most respected sake destinations, offering rare imports, curated flights, and an educational, Tokyo-inspired drinking culture. It perfectly reflects Antonio’s cross-category expertise and passion for beverages beyond wine.
About Mei Leaf

For tea, Mei Leaf in Camden stands out for its devotion to the craft of loose-leaf tea. With a focus on provenance, small growers, and transparent sourcing, Mei Leaf bridges the worlds of tea culture and sensory evaluation — aligning beautifully with Antonio’s holistic approach to flavour.
“One that just closed, unfortunately — Philglas & Swiggot.”
Generally, Riesling from Alsace or Pinot Noir from New Zealand.
Riesling — especially bright, expressive styles like Beyond the Wilderness Riesling 750mL.

Riesling is Antonio’s go-to choice under £20, thanks to its vibrant acidity, aromatic purity, and ability to pair effortlessly with a wide range of dishes. A great example at an excellent price point is Beyond the Wilderness Riesling 750mL — a fresh, lively expression that showcases everything he loves about the grape: citrus lift, clean minerality, and a deliciously refreshing finish. For drinkers looking to explore high-quality Riesling without stretching the budget, this bottle delivers exceptional value. Here’s a short video of Antonio on the wine.
Abruzzo, Italy.
About Abruzzo
Often overshadowed by Italy’s more internationally recognised regions, Abruzzo is home to some of the country’s most exciting and undervalued wines. From the structure and depth of Montepulciano d’Abruzzo to the crisp, floral character of Trebbiano Abruzzese and the increasingly respected Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo, the region delivers authenticity and value at every level. With its mountainous terroirs, Adriatic influence, and a rising generation of ambitious producers, Abruzzo is steadily earning the recognition it deserves — making it a fitting favourite for Antonio.
For readers interested in learning more about Antonio’s favourite region, here are helpful official associations and consortiums:
- Consorzio di Tutela Vini d’Abruzzo (Official governing body for Montepulciano, Trebbiano, Cerasuolo).

“There isn’t just one trend — rather, a shift toward a more modern approach to wine. The focus is on making wine approachable for younger generations: chilled reds, lightly fizzy styles, playful labels, and more affordable options. The idea is to make wine interesting and fun, lowering its sense of exclusivity and making the service more casual and less snobbish.”
Antonio’s perspective mirrors one of the most important evolutions in today’s wine landscape: accessibility, relevance, and emotional connection.
“The London Wine Competition stands out because it doesn’t just judge quality and value, but also packaging — giving lesser-known appellations the opportunity to shine and connect with consumers in a more impactful way.”

“My advice would be: don’t underestimate the power of packaging. The London Wine Competition looks beyond what’s in the glass — presentation and storytelling matter. A clear label, approachable design, and a style that speaks to today’s consumer can make the difference, especially for lesser-known appellations competing alongside big names. But of course, quality is paramount!”
Having your wines judged by Antonio Palmarini means placing them before a sommelier who blends deep technical knowledge with a modern, experience-driven approach to hospitality. His evaluation reflects the realities of today’s consumer — curious, value-focused, and drawn to wines that feel both authentic and accessible. Antonio’s approval signals to restaurants, retailers, and buyers that your wine not only performs in the glass, but resonates with the evolving tastes of contemporary drinkers.
