For decades, the challenge facing alcohol-free wine has been remarkably consistent.
Removing alcohol is relatively straightforward. Preserving everything that makes wine worth drinking is not.
Many alcohol-free wines lose the structure, texture, and sense of place that define their alcoholic counterparts, leaving consumers with products that feel more like substitutes than genuine wines.
It begins in the vineyard.
Located in Slovenské Nové Mesto, in the heart of Slovakia's historic Tokaj wine region, Strenk Winery is a family-owned estate that has long combined traditional Tokaj winemaking with a modern outlook. In 2025, the winery embarked on a new chapter with the launch of Vín0.0%, a range of premium alcohol-free wines designed to demonstrate that removing alcohol should never mean removing authenticity, regional identity, or gastronomic value.

"We recognised the growing demand for high-quality non-alcoholic alternatives," explains Maria Strenkova, spokesperson for the winery. "At the same time, we felt the market lacked products capable of preserving the authentic character of an exceptional wine region."
Tradition, innovation, and quality are the three values that underpin Strenk Winery. Generations of Tokaj winemaking experience remain central to the estate, but they are complemented by modern technology that allows the winery to explore new possibilities without compromising its identity. Rather than viewing alcohol-free wine as an alternative category, Strenk sees it as another expression of the region's terroir.
Carefully selected grapes from the estate's own vineyards are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness before undergoing traditional vinification. Only after the wine has fully developed its aroma, flavour profile, and natural acidity does the dealcoholisation process begin.
The alcohol is removed under low-temperature vacuum conditions, a gentle technique designed to preserve freshness, aromatic intensity, and varietal character. Equal attention is given to maintaining acidity, texture, and balance, ensuring the finished wine retains the structure expected of fine wine rather than becoming simply flavoured grape juice.
As the winery puts it, "A good alcohol-free wine doesn't begin as a substitute. It begins as wine."
Rather than relying on internationally familiar cultivars, Strenk Winery has focused on two varieties that are inseparable from Tokaj: Furmint and Muškát žltý (Yellow Muscat).
Furmint provides vibrant acidity, minerality, and structure, qualities that allow the wine to retain freshness even after dealcoholisation. Yellow Muscat contributes expressive floral aromas and bright fruit character, creating wines that remain unmistakably connected to their origin.
Together, they allow the winery to present Tokaj through a distinctly modern lens while remaining faithful to one of Europe's oldest wine regions.

The range includes semi-dry, semi-sweet, and sweet expressions of Furmint alongside semi-sweet and sweet Yellow Muscat bottlings. Designed for business lunches, restaurant dining, celebrations, driving, and everyday occasions, the wines acknowledge changing consumer lifestyles without asking drinkers to compromise on quality or wine culture. They are also naturally low in alcohol, low in histamine, and lower in calories than conventional wines.
At the 2026 London Wine Competition, Strenk Winery achieved one of the strongest performances in the alcohol-free category. Its Vín0.0% Muškát žltý Polosladké was awarded a Double Gold Medal, recognising not only the quality of the wine but also its commercial appeal, value, and packaging, the three pillars on which the competition is judged.
For the winery, the recognition represented validation of years spent demonstrating that alcohol-free wine can deliver authenticity, varietal character, and a genuine sense of place.
As Maria Strenkova observed following the awards, "We see the success as confirmation that alcohol-free wines can now achieve the same level of quality and complexity as traditional wines."

Consumers are increasingly moderating alcohol consumption while remaining unwilling to compromise on provenance, craftsmanship, or the dining experience. Restaurants, retailers, and importers are therefore seeking alcohol-free wines that deserve a place on the wine list rather than simply occupying a separate category.
For centuries, the region has built its reputation on expressive grape varieties and distinctive terroir. The winery's view is that those same characteristics can remain visible even after alcohol is gently removed, provided the process begins with exceptional fruit and careful winemaking.

While many producers approach alcohol-free wine as an adaptation, Strenk approaches it as an extension of its identity as a Tokaj winery. The emphasis remains on craftsmanship, regional expression, and respect for the vineyard. Technology simply provides another tool for communicating those values to a changing generation of wine drinkers.
That balance between heritage and innovation may ultimately become Strenk Winery's defining strength.
The world's oldest wine regions have survived because they have continually adapted while remaining true to their origins. In Tokaj, that story has unfolded over centuries.
With Vín0.0%, Strenk Winery is showing that the next chapter can be written without alcohol, while still remaining unmistakably wine.
