VINARS JIDVEI XO: Romania’s Modern Wine Powerhouse Rooted in Terroir, Scale and Precision

From the Heart of Târnave, Jidvei Is Elevating Romanian Wine Through Innovation, Indigenous Varieties and World-Class Vineyard Management

For decades, Romania has remained one of Europe’s most quietly compelling wine-producing nations — rich in indigenous grape varieties, diverse terroirs and centuries-old winemaking traditions. Yet few producers have done more to modernise, scale and internationalise Romanian wine than VINARS JIDVEI XO.

Located in the historic Târnave wine region of Transylvania, Jidvei has evolved into one of the country’s most technologically advanced and vertically integrated wine companies, combining large-scale vineyard holdings with meticulous quality management, sustainability-focused innovation and a deep commitment to showcasing Romania’s native grape varieties on the global stage.

Today, with over 500 international medals earned in the last decade and a growing portfolio of award-winning wines and spirits, Jidvei is positioning itself not only as a leader within Romanian wine, but as one of Eastern Europe’s most ambitious modern wine producers.

A Winery Built on Scale and Precision

Jidvei’s operation is remarkable both in size and sophistication.

The company processes more than 25 million kilograms of grapes annually across the DOC Târnave Jidvei appellation, with four highly specialised wineries located in Jidvei, Blaj, Bălcaciu and Tăuni. Combined, the facilities offer a storage capacity exceeding 35 million litres, supported by fully automated fermentation systems, modern bottling lines and advanced vineyard management technologies.

Yet despite its scale, the company’s philosophy remains deeply tied to terroir expression and varietal authenticity.

The vineyards — ranging between four and twenty years in age — are carefully mapped and managed according to soil composition, exposure and climatic conditions. Harvest timing is determined with precision to balance acidity, sugar accumulation and aromatic development, while grapes are transported to the wineries within hours to preserve freshness and varietal integrity.

This combination of industrial capability and detailed viticultural management has become one of Jidvei’s defining strengths in export markets.

Elevating Romania’s Indigenous Grapes

While international varieties such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon form an important part of the portfolio, Jidvei’s true distinction lies in its commitment to indigenous Romanian grapes — particularly Fetească Regală, Fetească Albă and Fetească Neagră.

The Târnave region is considered the birthplace of Fetească Regală, a variety first identified in the 1920s and now one of Romania’s signature white grapes. Under Jidvei’s stewardship, the grape has become a key ambassador for Romanian wine internationally, valued for its freshness, floral aromatics and naturally balanced acidity.

This focus on regional identity resonated strongly at the 2026 London Wine Competition, where Jidvei’s wines secured multiple medals across both native and international varietals.

Among the standout performers was Spirit Fetească Regală, which earned a Gold Medal and 93 points for its bright citrus profile, floral aromatics and creamy texture. The recognition reinforced the growing international appeal of Romanian indigenous varieties when paired with modern winemaking precision.

Additional medal winners included:

  • Owner’s Choice Maria Fetească Albă — praised for its mineral-driven freshness and delicate stone-fruit character
  • Owner’s Choice Ana Fetească Regală — recognised for floral aromatics and clean varietal expression
  • Mysterium Roze — highlighting bright berry fruit and freshness
  • Iluziv Sauvignon Blanc + Riesling + Muscat Ottonel — demonstrating aromatic complexity and crisp structure
  • Pinot Noir — showcasing lively acidity and elegant red fruit character

Together, the awards reflect the breadth of Jidvei’s portfolio and the company’s ability to balance accessibility with authenticity.

Technology Supporting Tradition

One of Jidvei’s defining philosophies is that innovation should enhance terroir rather than overshadow it.

Since 1999, the company has made significant investments in modern winemaking infrastructure aimed at preserving varietal character while improving precision, consistency and sustainability. Fully automated fermentation systems monitor and manage vinification processes, while the company’s Tăuni Winery — established in 2014 — was specifically designed around gravity-flow principles to minimise intervention during production.

Jidvei was also among the first producers in Romania to implement GPS-guided vineyard planting systems, improving both planting accuracy and operational efficiency.

Its vineyard management programme integrates weather stations, forecasting systems and mechanised canopy management to reduce disease pressure and optimise grape quality while supporting long-term sustainability goals.

The company’s private vine nursery — the largest in Romania — further strengthens quality control by producing up to five million grafted vines annually, using both local and international varieties sourced largely from organically certified planting material.

For international buyers, this level of vertical integration provides not only quality assurance, but also scalability and consistency — increasingly critical factors in modern wine distribution.

A Cool-Climate Identity with Growing Global Relevance

The Târnave region’s cool-climate conditions are central to Jidvei’s identity. Long growing seasons, moderate temperatures and strong diurnal variation help preserve acidity and aromatic freshness, making the area particularly suited to white wines, sparkling wines and increasingly refined rosé styles.

As climate change reshapes traditional wine regions globally, cooler European regions such as Târnave are attracting greater attention for their ability to produce fresher, lower-alcohol and more balanced wine styles aligned with evolving consumer preferences.

Jidvei has responded by continuously adapting its vineyard strategy, including expanding black grape plantings for premium rosé and red wine production while maintaining its core focus on aromatic whites.

This ability to evolve while preserving regional typicity is becoming a key differentiator for the producer.

Positioning Romanian Wine for the International Stage

Jidvei’s success ultimately reflects a broader shift happening within Romanian wine: the transition from historical producer to modern global competitor.

With substantial production capacity, investment in advanced viticulture, strong sustainability initiatives and a growing portfolio of internationally recognised wines, Jidvei is helping redefine perceptions of what Romanian wine can represent in export markets.

For importers, distributors and retail buyers, the producer offers an increasingly compelling proposition — wines with authentic regional identity, strong quality-to-value positioning and the operational reliability required for international growth.

As global consumers continue seeking discovery, provenance and distinctive indigenous varieties, Jidvei is proving that Romania’s future in wine may be one of Europe’s most exciting untapped stories.

And from the vineyards of Târnave, Jidvei intends to be one of the producers leading that conversation.
