Austrian wines have gained popularity in the UK market. What factors do you think have driven this success, and which varietals resonate most with UK consumers?

The grape variety that is most popular with UK consumers is Gruner Veltliner by far. For the label that is mentioned on the bottle, you get a great wine, quality, and value for money.

Apart from the UK, which international markets show the most potential for Austrian wines? Are there any emerging markets where you see significant opportunities in the near future?

After the UK, Austrian wines are in New York. Other markets that are showing potential are Scandinavian countries like Denmark, Sweden, and Norway.

As a Master Sommelier, are there any emerging Austrian varietals that particularly excite you? What should sommeliers and wine buyers be paying attention to in this category?

Gruner Veltliner, Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Rotgifler, for the white Blanfrankish, Saint Laurent, and Zweigelt.

In a competitive global market, how can Austrian wine producers further enhance their visibility and appeal to consumers?

They can deliver excellent wine with high quality, and offer fantastic value for money and consistency.

Your impressive career as a sommelier has led to numerous accolades, including becoming a Master Sommelier and earning top spots in global competitions. Could you tell us about a pivotal moment in your journey that shaped your approach to wine?

You’ve been recognized with prestigious awards such as the Cateys Wine and Spirit Ambassador Award and The Legend Award. How have these achievements influenced your work and passion for the wine industry?

Nothing changed but I believe that to be recognized by your peers is something special.

Judging wine competitions requires a deep understanding of diverse styles. How do you balance your personal preferences with objective judgment, and what have been the most rewarding aspects of your judging career?

For me, it's about my mindset. When I come to judge a competition it's to be honest with the wine I judge and also to still improve my personal judgment and maybe find some new wine that I don’t know about yet.

As an ambassador for the London Wine Competition, how do you see your role in promoting wine education and excellence within the industry?

To bring consistency to this competition and to help to bring an even higher quality.

With your vast experience, do you have a personal favorite Austrian varietal? What makes it stand out to you, and how would you recommend pairing it with food?

It is very difficult to pick a favourite. The wines of Austria by nature are of excellent standard. You can find some excellent sparkling wine, very interesting grapes, and also fantastic sweet wine. The only thing Austrian wine doesn't have is fortified wine.
