Barkan winery was born at the end of the 19th century. Its current incarnation is a wine paradise. So how did they do that?
It was actually simple. From the very first days of their existence, they have concentrated their attention on one thing only: grapes’ quality. The top-grade breeds were brought from all over the world and put in Barkan vineyards in Israel. Nowadays, there are dozens of breeds occupying a grand total of over 10 square kilometres of vineyards in winery’s possession, while every breed is grown in an area suitable for it.
In 2000, a new sophisticated winery was established at Hulda kibbutz located in the Judean plain. The winery was designed with the 21st century in mind. It boasts the most advanced production technologies in the world. The winery includes laboratories, farms, the packaging centre, and the marketing & logistics centre. Thanks to the enormous assortment of wine breeds and growth areas, the advanced fermentation methods, as well as over 5,000 natural oak barrels, Barkan winery is a real wine paradise.
The Superieur Elite Series represents the principle of achievement for Barkan wine production. The series presents wines made from top-quality grapes aged in casks of the highest quality.
In the world of winemaking, the Cabernet Sauvignon is labelled as a top wine with a grape variety of the highest potential. The Cabernet Sauvignon wine in the Superieur Elite Series fully expresses this grape variety in the spectrum of wines of the Barkan Winery. The wine is produced in four plots in Merom Galil, which has an excellent reputation for producing superb Cabernet Sauvignon grapes.
The wines were manufactured through relatively warm fermentation, while the grape skins continue to soak, to reveal the true constituents of the grapes, instilling complexity to the structure of the wine.
An impressive, complex and unique wine with a full body, a bouquet of smoked oak barrels and a powerful taste of fruits and herbs.
The altitude of the vineyard where the grapes are grown is one of the main influential factors which affect the characteristics of the wine. The wines from the Altitude Series come from superb vineyards of the Barkan Winery. The wines in these series are named according to the altitude of the vineyard, where the top-quality grapes are grown.
The name of the wine symbolizes the altitude of the vineyard above sea level. This wine is grown from a vineyard at an altitude of 624 meters above sea level, close to the Alma settlement in the Upper Galilee. After a maturation period of 14 months in oak casks, most of which are made from French oak, the wine is bottled without shading.
This wine is grown from a vineyard at an altitude of 720 meters above sea level, in the Godrim Mountains which lies between the Dovav Settlements and the Lebanese border. This wine has the potential to evolve gracefully for a long period of time.
The greatest challenge for any winemaker is to choose the best growing region for each variety of wine. The unrelenting quest for the solution of this challenge has led to the creation of the Special Reserve series, the new high-quality series by Barkan Winery.
The grapes for the Merlot Special Reserve come from the winery's vineyards in the Upper Galilee and the Jerusalem Hills which are characterized by terra rossa soil, a cold climate and dry air. This fine wine, which has been aged in oak barrels for 18 months, is elegant and velvety and will continue to improve under proper ageing conditions.
The grapes for the Chardonnay Special Reserve come from the winery's vineyard in the Jerusalem Hills and Rehania in the Upper Galilee which are characterized by poor soil and relatively low temperatures. This fine wine, which has been aged in oak barrels for 6 months, is rich and elegant with a fine combination of the tastes of the fruit and the aromas of the oak.
