1300 wines from more than 36 Countries participated in the 2022 London Wine Competition. This international wine competition looks to recognise, reward and help promote wine brands that have successfully been created to identify with and target a specific wine drinker. To be an award winner at the London Wine Competition, you will need to have a top-quality wine that offers both the trade and the consumer great value for money, and you will need to look good and truly stand out on the shelf and on the back bar.

It takes a lot to win big at the London Wine Competition. No wonder, the 2022 London Wine Competition saw a wine that checked all the boxes grab the title of the Wine of the Year.

The Wine of the Year award at the 2022 London Wine Competition goes to Gralyn Estate Artizan Rare Muscat by Gralyn Estate, Australia.

Gralyn Estate Artizan Rare Muscat is a fortified wine and a specialty of the Gralyn Estate’s legacy of wines. It is made from the Muscat varietal. This wine is produced using the Solera System. Within this winemaking practice, younger wines are blended in casks storing older wines. This process makes a blend of differently aged wines which results in no fixed vintage date. Blended over the years, these high-quality wines all hold a little bit of a legacy within them. Wines made within the Solera system are termed non-vintage or NV.

The award winner at the 2022 London Wine Competition, Gralyn Estate Artizan Rare Muscat, is matured in old oak casks and is a limited release. Everything about this wine is exquisite  — from flavour to label. It is rich and sports intense flavours of raisin and toffee. This exquisiteness also reflects in the intricate label which is an original artwork by Merilyn Hutton.

Gralyn Estate Artizan Rare Muscat won not only Wine of the Year but also across three more categories. This wine was also awarded the Gold Medal with 92 Points, Best in Show by Country, and Best Wine of the Year by Quality.

The tasting notes for this Wine of the Year read:

“Rich, dense character with good acidity and pronounced aromas of toffee, raisins, candied fruit, chocolate, mocha and dates. Generous palate with notes of toast, caramel and raisins and a complex long finish.”

It was a great year for the overall winner, Graylyn Estate Artizan Rare Muscat from Australia. Meanwhile, the Winery of the Year has gone to France’s Champagne Besserate de Bellefon Depuis 1843, while Best Wine of The Year by Value has been awarded to Portugal’s Adega de Pegões Touriga Nacional 2017. And the UK’s Gerald Bubbly White Wine 2020 most impressed the judges with its packaging. 

As for Best in Country Awards, Le Bastie Rosso 2012 from Italy won that accolade, while Vila Jardim Selection 2020 picked up the same prize for Portugal. Spain’s Best Wine was deemed to be La Pujada Vielles Vignes 2015, while France’s Best in Country went to Besserate de Bellefon Reserve Collection 1990.
