Meet Alvaro Ribalta MW, a maestro in the world of wines, whose journey is as rich as the vintages he expertly evaluates. From the bustling streets of London to the vineyards of Spain, Alvaro's narrative intertwines passion, education, and a deep reverence for the essence of each wine. In this article, we delve into Alvaro's wine odyssey, exploring his discerning criteria, the evolution of the industry, and the unique charm he discovers in every glass. Join us as we uncork the tales behind extraordinary wines, as seen through the eyes of a master storyteller.
I started my journey in 2006 in London, freshly off the boat from Spain, working in hospitality in a number of different establishments in the capital. The seed was already planted so I began my education through the WSET, culminating with the Diploma in 2014, having been awarded both the Lustau and Derouet-Jameson Scholarships. The latter enabled me to enter the MW program, which I completed in 2021. I have been working for Indigo Wine since 2014, a specialist UK importer, covering different positions within the company. I moved back to Spain in 2021 and I then set up my own import and distribution company called Massal Selection.

I value the overall quality, drinkability, and elegance of the wines, giving a lot of importance to whether they reflect a sense of place.
There has been a remarkable increase in quality from lesser-known regions, both in classic countries as well as in others less known for their wine production. London is the epicentre of the wine world so any wine worth drinking will always arrive in London first.
This competition gives the opportunity to wineries to benchmark their own wines against those of the competition, both in terms of quality and packaging.

Generally speaking, a white wine can be identified by high quality when has high acidity but this can be not true if we are tasting a white wine from a warmer climate where the aroma profile can be more intense. Or in a red wine tannins and alcohol can be gives an idea of quality wine? I personally believe to value a wine the best thing is to have a sip of it. Maybe even a white wine lower in alcohol from a cool climate or a red wine with lower tannins from a warmer climate can be very interesting in displaying high quality because unique.
For sure when I have time I like to travel and visit vineyards. I am planning a trip to Loire Valley, visiting castles and tasting wines. It will be amazing also to include my running passion along the river.

The wine which I would like to drink on all occasions is Champagne. Dom Perignon, Krug? yes Please!
