Chateau GRAND BARI s.r.o.

Slovakia

The ancient Romans already cultivated vines in the Tokaj region. The development of this area was greatly influenced by the Tatars, who depopulated it with their raids and destroyed the vineyards. Bélla IV was responsible for its renaissance. During his reign, the region was colonized by Italian settlers from the area of Formini and Bari. They brought with them rich experience and a new variety of Furmint, which is the basis for the production of Tokaj wine.

In the second half of the seventeenth century, the priest Laczko Maté from Moldava nad Bodvou made the first Tokaj selection, which he gave to the wife of his landlord. Zuzana Lorantffy liked the wine, so she ordered it to be produced in the largest possible quantities. Wines from this region were also drunk at the tsar's court in Sankt Petersburg.

Among the admirers of Tokaj wine were Voltaire, Cromwell, even Napoleon, and the famous French king Louis XIV. In this period Tokaj wine received the epithet - Vinum regum - rex vinorum, which in Slovak translation means wine of kings - king of wines.
